چکیده
Pediatric ocular trauma is a major cause of ocular morbidity in children and is a leading cause of non congenital unilateral blindness in this age group. Every year a quarter of a million children present with serious ocular trauma and the vast majority of these injuries are preventable. Estimates of the incidence of serious ocular trauma varies from 8.85 to 15.2 per 100,000 per year. Extrapolation using global population data suggests that every year 160,000 to 180,000 children under 15 years sustain an ocular trauma serious enough to require hospitalization. 21% to 24% are penetrating globe injuries. Those that are less serious are more numerous: 95% of ocular injuries in this age group do not require hospitalization, suggesting that the number of eye injuries in children under 15 years of age might be as high as 3.3 to 5.7 million cases annually. Cataract secondary to self-inflicted blunt trauma in children with autism spectrum disorder.
We report 3 cases of bilateral cataract secondary to self-inflicted blunt eye trauma in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). All 3 children hit their foreheads, orbits, or globes repeatedly for long periods of time and developed cataracts. Clinicians must be aware of this phenomenon to diagnose ocular pathology early and to provide adequate education, counseling, and services to affect...
متن کاملAn evidence-based update on myopia and interventions to retard its progression.
Myopia is the most common human eye disorder. With its increasing prevalence and earlier age-of-onset in recent birth cohorts, myopia now affects almost 33% of adults in the United States, and epidemic proportions of 85% to 90% adults in Asian cities. Unlike children in Western populations, where the prevalence of myopia is very low (less than 5%), Asian children have prevalences as high as 29%...

متن کاملSpontaneous disconnection of glaucoma tube shunt extenders.
Glaucoma drainage implants are frequently used in children with severe forms of glaucoma, and tube extenders are sometimes required to compensate for ocular growth or when the intraocular portion of the tube is thought to be too short. We report 2 cases of spontaneous disconnection of a tube extender, occurring 8 months after insertion in one case and 3 years later in the other. In both cases t...
متن کاملRecurrent isolated sixth nerve palsy after consecutive annual influenza vaccination in a child.
Recurrent sixth nerve palsy in children in the absence of structural or other neurological abnormality is a rare occurrence. We report the case of recurrent isolated sixth (abducens) nerve palsy after consecutive annual influenza vaccinations in an otherwise-healthy 2-year-old boy. Investigations including magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and orbits after each episode failed to reveal an...
